Use of CACCHT data

This statement concerns dataset licensing. Software and third-party materials are governed by their separately stated licenses.

CACCHT datasets released under the Creative Commons Attribution–NonCommercial 4.0 International (CC BY-NC 4.0) license may be copied, redistributed, and adapted, in whole or in part, for non-commercial purposes, including research, education, and use in applications or websites. Consult each dataset’s repository for its applicable license.

CC BY-NC 4.0 does not authorize commercial use of the data or adaptations. Non-commercial means use that is not primarily intended for or directed toward commercial advantage or monetary compensation. Selling the datasets, bundling them with purchases, or offering them as subscription content is prohibited where this constitutes commercial use. Giving credit, providing free access, or requiring users to import the data does not, by itself, establish that a provider’s use is non-commercial. Commercial use requires separate permission from the relevant rights holders unless applicable law permits it independently of the license.

When sharing the data or modified versions, you must give the required credit; retain supplied copyright, license, and warranty-disclaimer notices; include the license text or a link; retain a supplied source link where reasonably practicable; and identify modifications, preserving notices of earlier changes. You may not impose legal terms or effective technological measures, such as digital rights management, that restrict recipients’ licensed rights. The license grants no permission to imply endorsement by CACCHT or the dataset creators and does not require surrounding software to be open source. Failure to comply terminates licensed rights, subject to the license’s reinstatement provisions.

Our preferred practice is for developers to let users obtain datasets directly from the official repositories and import or load them through a separate, user-initiated process. We encourage developers to keep the datasets separate from paid products and subscriptions, preserving their independent availability and provenance. These are recommendations, not additional license conditions; compliant redistribution remains permitted.

Please cite the dataset and version used. This statement summarizes the license without adding conditions. The full license governs, and uses that do not require permission under applicable law remain unaffected.

Not every CACCHT dataset uses CC BY-NC 4.0: the Aleppo Codex dataset is released under CC BY-SA 4.0, which permits commercial use on share-alike terms. Each license is shown on its dataset card.
